Van Morrison – Moondance (1970)

VANThe yang to Astral Weeks’ yin, the brilliant Moondance is every bit as much a classic as its predecessor; Van Morrison’s first commercially successful solo effort, it retains the previous album’s deeply spiritual thrust but transcends its bleak, cathartic intensity to instead explore themes of renewal and redemption. Light, soulful, and jazzy, Moondance opens with the sweetly nostalgic “And It Stoned Me,” the song’s pastoral imagery establishing the dominant lyrical motif recurring throughout the album — virtually every track exults in natural wonder, whether it’s the nocturnal magic celebrated by the title cut or the unlimited promise offered in “Brand New Day.” At the heart of the record is “Caravan,” an incantatory ode to the power of radio; equally stirring is the majestic “Into the Mystic,” a song of such elemental beauty and grace as to stand as arguably the quintessential Morrison moment.

Van Morrison – Choppin Wood (2001)

van

In October 2000 Van Morrison began work on his second collaboration with Linda Gail Lewis. The previous month ‘You Win Again’ an album of rock ‘n’ roll, country and blues covers had been released. This next album provisionally titled Choppin’ Wood contained Linda Gail Lewis’s vocals and piano parts overdubbed on all bar one track.

Van Morrison – Born To Sing: No Plan B [[email protected]] (2012)

Touring his legendary Astral Weeks album appears to have rejuvenated Van Morrison. His 35th solo studio album is his jazziest: the warm brass and catchy, sweet melodies recall 1970’s Moondance. But the music’s velvet glove delivers some of his hardest-hitting lyrics. With the global economic meltdown providing inspiration, End of the Rainbow finds him rueing capitalism, materialism and social climbing. Educating Archie lines up targets like ducks: “global elites”, “slavery to capitalism”, control by media and – most wonderfully – “entertainment on TV and all kinds o’ shite!” Morrison is famously curmudgeonly, and there’s more black humour in the sublime Goin’ Down to Monte Carlo. Like a Belfast Mark E Smith, he flees Sartre’s “hell” of other people only to find himself bombarded by “some kind of phoney pseudo-jazz!” Elsewhere, his moods swing like the rhythm section. Open the Door is warm and friendly, Pagan Heart a Doorsy blues. Of all the songs here, If in Money We Trust – a mantra-like rumination on the love of Mammon over God – most deserves to join his pantheon of classics.

Van Morrison – Poetry: Selected By Irish Poet Paul Durcan (2010)

In Wavelenght magazine No. 1 there was an article by the leading Irish poet Paul Durcan called “The Drumshambo Hustler” which was first printed in the litery magazine MAGILL in May, 1988. The article attempts to put Van’s poetry into a modern Irish context and he contends that Patrick Kavanagh and Van Morrison are the two finest poets in Ireland in his lifetime.
