With his new album, Are You Serious, Andrew Bird has widened the breadth of his art by directly reflecting his own human experience. With key contributions from Fiona Apple and Blake Mills, Are You Serious attains a level of expression that’s a personal, evolutionary leap.
Sean Watkins loves playing with Nickel Creek, make no mistake about that. But the singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist was also happy to be left to his own devices again for What To Fear, his fifth solo album.Watkins employed a slightly different approach to recording the 10 tracks on What To Fear, working both with the California acoustic trio Bee Eaters and a rock-flavored rhythm section of drummer Matt Chamberlain and bassist Mike Elizondo. After some trial and error, Watkins decided there was strength in numbers. “I had four songs I felt were really representative of the record, and I recorded them three different ways,” Watkins says.
Crowe, of Scottish, Irish, and Manx descent, grew up surrounded by jazz, classical, and rock music, and discovered additional influences on her own such as Ani DiFranco, Pearl Jam, Tori Amos, and Counting Crows. She plays music of all these genres, making her difficult to categorize.
Little Windows, the first collaborative album from singer-songwriters Teddy Thompson and Kelly Jones, packs a whole career’s worth of sparkling pop gems and sobering country ballads into a collection that runs just short of 26 minutes. What’s more remarkable, however, is that the LP represents a relatively new partnership, and every one of the songs is original to the project, although any of the album’s 10 tracks could be mistaken for some long-lost sonic nugget from the Fifties or Sixties.
