Jon Konrad Wert, the one-man band known as Possessed by Paul James, is a conflicted man. He grew up in a religiously devout Mennonite society. His father was a preacher. His mother was a piano teacher. Somewhere in his past he discovered pre-World War blues and an antithetical lifestyle to his Amish-like upbringing. Wert plays banjo, guitar, mandolin, violin and a “stomp-box” (which is, apparently, a board attached to a tambourine that one pounds on with his or her foot). He plays in a passionate fervor of outbursts, hooting and hollering as if on fire, or, as his project name suggests, possessed. His sound is a restrained explosion of old blues and country.
Joan Baez beat Bob Dylan to folk stardom, but she soon became one his biggest supporters, key interpreters, and briefly his lover. Any Day Now finds her playing all three roles; supporting, interpreting, and loving a disc full of his songs. Many of the more curious numbers (“The Walls of Redwing,” “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere”) were unavailable from Dylan at the time of the double-album’s original 1968 release. Baez gets deeply into this stuff, adding her own weight and color to Dylan’s idiosyncratic lines; even tackling the epic-length weirdness of “Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands.” The best track, “Love Is Just a Four-Letter Word,” remains the definitive version of the song.

Tracy Bonham’s music can best be described as a mixture of post-grunge and rock music. Her classical music training can be heard in the arrangements as she mixes the violin, Hammond organ and piano along with the traditional bass, drums and guitar. After being labeled an “alternative” musician since her debut, Bonham’s latest album Wax & Gold is veering towards a more indie rock sound. Kevin Salem is the producer of the record who also plays the guitar on the tracks and co-wrote a few of the tunes.
