Winners of our 2013 Spiral Earth Award for best duo, Phillip Henry & Hannah Martin, have made a distinct impression on the roots music scene with their dazzling displays of contemporary folk . Much has been made of their skilled musicianship, and rightly so, with Phillip being a truly stand out artist producing mesmerizing displays on dobro, tenor guitar, harmonica, and all manner of percussion. Whereas Hannah’s voice, fiddle, and banjo, not only complement perfectly but bring a complexity and character all of their own.

The smart pop of 80’s college radio heroes and 60’s pop forbearers is filtered through the greasy blues rock of the 1970’s and the garage pop revival currently percolating all over The Bye Bye Blackbirds’ hometown of Oakland, California. It’s thinking man’s rock’n’roll without any of the apparent contradictions – catchy as hell and buzzing with electricity, but soulful and rewarding in its lyrical and thematic depth, too.
