Sanders Bohlke – Ghost Boy (2013)

sanOn Sanders Bohlke’s new record, his evolution as a songwriter with lush soundscapes that layer brooding and billowy textures against his soulful voice; both beautiful and dark. The collection of eleven new songs, produced by Jeffrey Cain (Remy Zero), was recorded as a complete work – meant to be heard from start to finish – recalling what audiophiles miss about the  “album age.”  On their own, each track is a standout, every song an expansion of Bohlke’s unique style – sparse and ethereal, layered and complex, with lush soundscapes against a soulful voice.

Cherokee Red – Cherokee Red (2013)

cheWith a combination of noisy, floating instrumentals, folksy vocal harmonies, nostalgic audio clips from old newsreels, and the slow, lilting pace of the album makes  want to go to dark bar, drink absinthe and write poetry. In case it would be atrocious poetry, particularly on absinthe, but the craving is there as listen to this album!

Besides Daniel – This Marvelous Grief (2013)

BEBesides Daniel is Daniel Brewer, an Atlanta singer/songwriter/and musician. In the words of the man himself, Daniel Brewer, the album “is a collection of songs that create a particular landscape of relational brokenness, with ourselves, others, and God. I found this as a thread running through the entirety of this album-a retrospective enlightenment. I have found these songs to orbit the imperfections in our love and the struggle to forgive ourselves, our companions, our family, and God.”

At the time of our interview, he stated he was going to use thirteen of the 40+ songs he had written. Another track snuck in as This Marvelous Grief comes in with 14 tracks. The influences and different styles are evident throughout. Whether it is the Graceland era Paul Simon-like “The Center of Georgia,” the Beck-esque “Grand Canyon,” or the distinctly Eleanor Rigby-ish strings on “Penny Queen,” you can see how Brewer morphs it all into something that is 100{10a6abfbbdec3edb8c12d962d1d412e29cfd8a3c073085b2c5ae8aa3ea404fb3} “Daniel.”

Bering Strait – Bering Strait (2003)

berNashville has long been abuzz about Bering Strait, six classically trained Russian musicians who play country and bluegrass music as if they grew up in Omaha, not Obninsk. But after four years and five record labels with no record released, do Bering Strait live up to the hype? Well, there’s no question about their chops. The album’s one instrumental, the Grammy-nominated “Bearing Straight,” proves it in a Béla Fleck fusion sort of way. Yet mostly this debut aims for the solidly mainstream target audience, in songs about love, sensuality, and romance, whether shattered or shared. Lead vocalist Natasha Borzilova delivers poised and nuanced readings, and almost all the songs were written by bankable Nashville tunesmiths, Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Mary Ann Kennedy, and Pam Rose among them. The only hints that these kids hail from somewhere outside the WSM listening area come from brief, spoken dialogue and a traditional Russian folk song (“Porushka-Paranya”). What’s missing is a little more personality, a few more original tunes (the best, “Only This Love,” finds band member Ilya Toshinsky at the head of the credits), and a lot more of that aforementioned hot picking.

Bonnie Whitmore – Embers To Ashes (2011)

boBonnie Whitmore is a product of a pretty interesting childhood. Raised in Texas by a classically trained opera-singer mother and singer-songwriter father, along with a talented violin- and fiddle-playing older sister, Whitmore naturally became influenced by and drew inspiration from her family. At age 8, she started to play bass, joined the family band and toured Texas. Later, she learned to play acoustic guitar and cello, then, at 16, Whitmore began writing her own material and performing with local musicians. Her sophomore album, Embers to Ashes has all the trappings of great country music – the stories, emotion, and reality. It takes the listener on a turbulent journey from the beginning to the end of a relationship, chronicling the anger, heartbreak, pain, and loss. Although, mainly a country album, Whitmore does expand the sound with a rockabilly, Western swing influenced title track, rock-infused “You’re Gonna Miss Me,” and the Roy Orbison-like “Please Take the Words Back,” but it’s her ballads like “Cowboy Lullaby” and “Love Too Sweet” with their melancholic melodies and Whitmore’s tender yet aching vocals that standout the most.

Federal – The Blood Flowed Like Wine (2012)

fedFederale’s The Blood Flowed Like Wine, the bands third full release, expands on their efforts to re-capture the haunting, violent atmosphere evoked by classic Spaghetti Western films. Two years in the making, TBFLW maintains Federale’s use of soaring operatic vocals, fanfare blasting trumpets, lonesome whistle, twangy reverb drenched guitars and swelling men’s choir. TBFLW expands Federale’s vocabulary to include lyric driven songs (feat. Alex Maas of the Black Angels and KP Thomas of Spindrift), and an expanded range of instruments, including string performances (Portland’s 45th Parallel Ensemble), flute, French horn and oboe (with members of the Oregon Symphony) and pedal steel (Paul Brainard of Richmond Fontaine). Spooky electronic textures and unusual exotic instruments add a beautiful haunted quality to many tracks.

Brass Bed – The Secret Will Keep You (2013)

BRASSLafayette, Louisiana based band Brass Bed’s new album The Secret Will Keep You is a swift-moving, riverine composition of indie-rock teeming with the alluvial guitar bursts and thumping bass that are deposited along the banks of the ten songs that comprise the album. Brass Bed perfectly navigates the waters of flowing pop and upbeat song craft; sometimes this stream lazes by gently while at others it bubbles up into fast-moving rapids. The Secret Will Keep You is equal parts driving power pop and fluid sounds.

Rebecca Pronsky – Only Daughter (2013)

reThe ten songs on Only Daughter, Rebecca’s 4th album to date, allow us to hear that voice in all its splendour; in fact the more you listen, the more you want of it.Mostly self-penned with the one non-original, Mark Kozelek’s ambiguous Glenn Tipton (it’s not often you get two members of Judas Priest, two American boxing legends and the ‘Polish Prince’ all name-checked in the same song), the songs range in style from the twangy call to action opener Rise Up, the Rumours-era Fleetwood Mac-inspired Honesty, the riff-laden hard rock of The Garden and the whimsical closer Please Forget Me, each weaving effortlessly around Rebecca’s flawless vocal delivery.
Produced by husband/musician Rich Bennett, with vocal contributions from Suzzy Roche and daughter Lucy Wainwright Roche, the core band is made up of Rebecca and Rich both on guitars, Dan Shuman on bass and Russ Meissner on drums. Coming over pretty much a mainstream effort, despite the cowboy boots and vintage dress on the monochrome insert, the album certainly commands a listen and you shouldn’t be disappointed.
