imone White clearly felt like taking a different creative path on her fourth album, and no one can accuse her of being shy about exploring new avenues on Silver Silver. The warm, homespun sound of White’s previous work is gone, replaced by a spare, atmospheric tone dominated by electronics and ghostly percussion accents, as organic instruments punctuate the tracks without puncturing the cool and spectral atmosphere. The album has been produced by Fol Chen’s Samuel Bing and features guest appearances from Andrew Bird and Victoria Williams, and it may be that these outside influences have spurred White into producing something that bit more inventive. Either way, the lush sound of the album and its forays into electronica and RnB is compelling throughout.

Lakes of Canada began in Montreal in the summer of 2010 when best-friends Jake Smith and Conor O’Neil began performing Jake’s songs as a duo. The duo soon added the dynamic Chris Barillaro to their group, adding his voice and piano playing to their already expanding sound, as well as guitar-expert Tim Dobby. Described as “a cross between Fleet Foxes and Simon and Garfunkel” (Ottawa Sun), Lakes employs lyrically driven songs rich with vocal harmonies.
