After a Seven Years wait the legendary Johnny Winter will release his new studio album entitled Roots via Megaforce Records. This album returns Johnny to his roots by paying homage to the iconic blues heroes whose pioneering music influenced Winter’s own signature sound and style. Roots is the follow up to his Grammy-nominated I’m a Blues Man. Many friends will appear as special guests and join Winter trading licks in honoring his idols, including Sonny Landreth, Vince Gill, Warren Haynes, John Popper, Jimmy Vivino, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, John Medeski and Johnny’s brother Edgar Winter.

Remove the handful of garage rock songs from Ryan Adams’s classic 2000 solo debut Heartbreaker and you’ve got an album that vaguely resembles his latest, Ashes & Fire (out Oct. 11). Produced by the legendary Glyn Johns, the album is by far the most stripped-down, intimate thing he’s ever done— a sort of post-millennial Tumbleweed Connection. Sounds good on paper, but the infamously prolific former Whiskeytown frontman has sort of painted himself into a corner at this point in his career. Over the course of 12 studio albums (on his own or with the now dissolved Cardinals), Adams has run the stylistic gamut from raw folk contemplation to balls-out rock n’ roll and even outlandish space metal. If Ashes & Fire fails to astound, it’s only because we’ve heard so much of this stuff from him already.

Jason Boland and the Stragglers (JB & S) will release their sixth studio album. The band includes Oklahoma-born, Texas-based singer, Jason Boland (lead vocals, guitar), Roger Ray (pedal steel, dobro, lead/rhythm guitar), Brad Rice (drums/backing vocals), Jeremy Watkins (fiddle) and Grant Tracy (bass). They encompass everything that authentic and traditional country music should. “It’s all five of us guys [on Rancho Alto] and we added a keyboard player”, remarked Jason Boland in our recent interview. Rancho Alto, Spanish for ‘High Ranch’, is an impressive achievement that deserves generous recognition. The album opens with ‘Down Here in the Hole’, a boot-tappin’, country-swingin’ tune. The momentum of the music matches the message of a trapped mining worker, maintaining an outlook of optimism.‘Every Moment I’m Gone’ stands a little outside of other JB & S songs as a slow and sweet love song, with a delicate maturity about it, punctuated with key work. “Keep your eyes on the horizon and a hand on your heart, a prayer on your precious lips for those wandering the dark, now when I’m lonely I’m never alone, cause I carry you with me now, every moment I’m gone”.

The Super Deluxe features not only the original remastered album and accompanying studio and live B-sides, but the first full official release of the pre-Nevermind demos recorded at producer Butch Vig’s Smart Studios, as well as boombox recordings of subsequent rehearsals through which the listener can actually experience “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” “Come As You Are,” “On A Plain” and others that take shape before his or her very ears. The Super Deluxe also offers an altogether new perspective on the finished Nevermind album exclusive to this format in the form of the Devonshire Mixes: the album as produced and mixed by Vig as opposed to the commercially released final version produced by Vig and mixed by Andy Wallace. Rounding out the Super Deluxe are a pair of previously unreleased BBC recordings and the aforementioned 1991 Paramount show available for the first time and exclusive to this format on CD and DVD (which also features all four music videos from Nevermind).

Toronto’s alt-country champions Elliot BROOD have announced the release of their highly anticipated third full-length album today; Days Into Years will arrive on September 27 via Paper Bag Records.

Day into Years is the type of progression the band needed to make. New textures and new ideas help keep the band sounding inspired and fresh, but they are still backed by the same passion and historical obsessions. You might not bang on cake sheets for this one, but you will certainly nod along approvingly.

2011 two CD collection from the Alt-Country/Americana outfit. Yours Truly is split into two parts: the first disc showcases popular favorites chosen by fans in an online survey; the second includes obscure, hard-to-find B-sides and previously unreleased demo versions of 16HP masterpieces. Yours Truly was mixed by producer Bob Ferbrache (Blood Axis, Soul Merchants, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, Tarantella) specially for this release. The deluxe package comes with a lyric booklet with rare photos and artwork. As rural gothic goes, one cannot do much better than David Eugene Edwards and company, with their use of acoustic old-time instruments mixed with the impassioned vocals and fire-and-brimstone lyrics.

Joe Bonamassa is a very busy man. In March he released his latest solo album Dust Bowl and in June his band Black Country Communion released 2, arguably the best rock album of the year. Now the dream team of Bonamassa and producer Kevin Shirley join up with singer/songwriter Beth Hart for Don’t Explain, a 11 track collection of soul covers.Don’t Explain opens with “Sinner’s Prayer,” a Ray Charles cover, which gets things off to a bluesy start. The album really starts cooking on “For My Friend” by Bill Withers. Bonamassa begins with a killer riff that wouldn’t be out of place on a Black Country Communion album and Hart’s raw vocals knock it out of the park. The highlight of Don’t Explain has to be Etta James’ “I’d Rather Go Blind.
